I recently completed my five-year anniversary at Wellington, and I wanted to take a moment to reflect on our achievements in the UK market, highlight where we are today and express my excitement about what’s to come.
Our journey in the UK began over 40 years ago.
Wellington has a long heritage with institutional clients globally, and over the past 5 years, we have been focused on raising our profile with local intermediaries. Fast forward to today, our UCITS funds are now available on over 25 platforms (including Fidelity and Hargreaves Lansdown) and the team have built strong relationships with the key distributors across private banks, wealth managers, advisers and the retail consultants, who play such an important role for our clients.
Today we manage close to 40bn GBP in assets in the UK, across several thousand financial adviser, private banking, wealth management and larger institutional clients. Our London office is our second largest office, after our headquarters in Boston, and is home to roughly 500 employees, many of which are locally based investors and investment teams, which make it a key hub.
Staying true to our investment-led approach
Our business model is simple. We have a sole focus on investment management, and as one of the world’s largest active global asset managers, we believe in staying the course as an investment led business, focused on fundamental bottom-up research.
We are structured as a private partnership, wholly owned by employees of the firm, all of whom are active in the business. This has been an effective tool for attracting and retaining talent and has instilled a long-term approach to the way in which we manage money and partner with our clients.
What does the future hold for the UK?
UK clients have begun to think more globally - our Global Credit strategy has been an area where we have been able to help clients seeking a diversified, high quality, core credit allocation. Fixed income continues to be a key focus. We are fortunate that our capability spans the full spectrum and there is a full range of tools available for different client outcomes.
Equities continue to play a core role in our clients’ portfolios. Our Global Stewards strategy (run by London-based Citywire A-rated Yolanda Courtines) has been one example of a style neutral, active portfolio that’s served clients well as volatility has picked up.
It’s an exciting time to be at Wellington. As a team we look forward to building on the relationships with our existing partners and developing new partnerships as we grow the team. Here’s to the next 5 years!
